LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Israel Jacobowitz upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Physician of the Year Award by
the Aleh Foundation

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Israel
Jacobowitz upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Physician of the Year Award by the Aleh Foundation, to be celebrated at
its 29th Anniversary Awards Dinner Ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, 2013,
at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Israel Jacobowitz is a cardiothoracic surgeon and co-Di-
rector of the Atrial Fibrillation Center at Maimonides Medical Center in
Brooklyn, New York; he completed his residency at New York University
Medical Center, as well as his fellowship at Buffalo Children's Hospi-
tal; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jacobowitz has been one of the leading figures in cardiac
surgery in New York State for more than 30 years; he has been the foun-
dation of the Maimonides Medical Center Cardiac Surgery program since he
first joined the staff in 1982, and served for many years as chief of
cardiothoracic surgery; in addition, he has an enormous experience in
all aspects of cardiac surgery, including valve repair and valve
replacement, aortic root surgery, left ventricular reconstruction for
heart failure, and coronary artery surgery; and
WHEREAS, Publishing extensively and continually active in research,
Dr. Jacobowitz has been one of the leading pioneers internationally in
"beating heart surgery" (off-pump coronary artery bypass - OPCAB),
having performed thousands of these operations; with the advance of new
technology in 1997, he became the leading figure in OPCAB in the North-
east; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jacobowitz is a fellow of both the American College of
Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons; he is a member of the
Academy of Surgical Research, the American Heart Association Council on
Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, the American College of Chest
Physicians, the American Society of Artificial Organs, the Association
for Academic Surgery, the Brooklyn Surgical Society, the International
Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, Kings County
Medical Society, the New York Cardiological Society, the New York Socie-
ty for Thoracic Surgery, the New York Surgical Society, the Society of
Thoracic Surgeons and the Spencer Surgical Society; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Dr. Israel Jacobowitz's distin-
guished record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this
Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Israel Jacobowitz upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Physician of the Year Award by the Aleh Foundation; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Israel Jacobowitz.
