LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Ex-Chief Louis Santosus upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition after 50 years of dedi-
cated service to the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to recognize and commend
Ex-Chief Louis Santosus upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition after 50 years of dedicated service to the Mineola Volunteer
Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Ex-Chief Louis Santosus will fittingly be honored at the
Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration of Company One of the Mineola Volunteer
Fire Department, to be celebrated on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the
Swan Club in Roslyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Ex-Chief Louis Santosus has been a dedicated and valued
member of Company No.1 of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department, serving
as Vice President and President and rising through the ranks to serve as
Captain and then as Chief of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, He has been a Chairman of numerous committees as well as
Fireman of the Year of Company No. 1, the Mineola Volunteer Fire Depart-
ment, and the Town of Hempstead; and
WHEREAS, Louis Santosus has also been an active member of the communi-
ty, serving as Little League Manager, a Mineola Village Board Trustee,
and Deputy Mayor for a period of seventeen years, and is currently serv-
ing as a member of the Fire Council and of the Nassau Country Critical
Incidence Stress Management Team; and
WHEREAS, Ex-Chief Louis Santosus is a lifelong Mineola resident; he
attended Mineola Public Schools, graduating in 1962; he joined the
Mineola Junior Fire Department in 1963 and has advanced through the
ranks of Engine Company One where he has been an active firefighter for
the past 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Ex-Chief Louis Santosus served ably as Vice President, Presi-
dent, Second Lieutenant, and First Lieutenant and led the company as
Captain and served as Second Assistant Chief, First Assistant Chief, and
Chief of the Mineola Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Louis Santosus was, in addition, named Company One Firefight-
er of the Year, Town of North Hempstead Firefighter of the Year, and
Firefighter of the Year of the Mineola Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure as First Assistant Chief, Ex-Chief Louis
Santosus, with support from the Department, built up the Mineola Junior
Fire Department into the premier Junior Fire Department in the region;
and
WHEREAS, In 1983, after serving as Chief of the Mineola Fire Depart-
ment, Louis Santosus served on the Village of Mineola board for 17
years, as Trustee and Deputy Mayor; and
WHEREAS, His service to the Mineola Fire Department continued through
his service as Secretary, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the First
Battalion Chiefs Association; and
WHEREAS, Louis Santosus is currently serving as a Charter Member of
the Nassau County Critical Incidence Stress Management Team, and as
Warden of Engine Company One of the Mineola Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, With Ex-Chief Louis Santosus throughout have been his wife
Patricia and their four children, Patti, Bonnie, Gary, and Brian and,
more recently, his nine grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Louis Santosus is justly proud that Brian is an Ex-Captain of
Company One and that both Brian and Gary are Lieutenants in the
F.D.N.Y.; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Louis
Santosus is such a firefighter; throughout 50 years of devoted service,
this volunteer has heroically performed, above and beyond the call of
duty, those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Ex-Chief Louis Santosus for 50 years of distinguished service;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Louis Santosus.
