LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Ada Essie Sharpton, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of her community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Ada Essie Sharpton of Dothan, Alabama, died on Thursday,
March 22, 2012, at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, Born in Springfield, Ohio, the second child of Emmet and
Mattie D. Richard, Ada Sharpton was raised in Alabama and later moved
with her husband to Brooklyn, New York; she moved back to Alabama in
1989; and
WHEREAS, Ada Sharpton was originally a member of the Cornerstone
Baptist Church in Brooklyn until later joining the Washington Temple
Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn where she served on the Usher Board
for a number of years; and
WHEREAS, Ada Sharpton was a distinguished woman of God who brought an
enlightened and fruitful guidance to all she served and befriended; and
WHEREAS, Working as a part-time maid while maintaining the household
as a single mother, Ada Sharpton was known for her Thursday night
dinners, where she would display a Thanksgiving feast every week; and
WHEREAS, Ada Sharpton eventually became president of Mothers in Action
and was dedicated in becoming a strong advocate for communities with
fatherless children; and
WHEREAS, Ada Sharpton's many years of community involvement led her to
become a source of inspiration and a role model to single mothers, a
missionary of hope, and a friend to all whose path she crossed; and
WHEREAS, Despite Ada Sharpton's unfortunate decline in health, she
still inspired greatness among all her children, and continued to spread
love and be something wonderful for all to aspire to; and
WHEREAS, Ada Sharpton is survived by her four children, Thomas Jeffer-
son "Sonny" Glasgow, Ernestine "Tina" Glasgow, Charidean "Joy" Sharpton
and the Reverend Al Sharpton; 10 grandchildren; and a host of great-
grandchildren, relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Ada Sharpton leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all she
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Ada Essie Sharpton, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Ada Essie Sharpton.
