LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Italian American Civic Association
of Massena, Inc. upon the occasion of being honored as one of the last
social ethnic clubs in northern New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with its
time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those organiza-
tions which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural
diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Italian American Civic Association of Massena, Inc. upon the occasion of
being honored as one of the last social ethnic clubs in northern New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Italian American Civic Association of Massena, Inc. was
formed on November 24, 1920; the founding members were Frank Jermano,
Pasquale Romeo, Chester Marando, Antonio Creazzo, and Pasquale Catanzar-
ite; and
WHEREAS, The name was changed to Sons of Italy Club of Massena, New
York, Inc. in 1930; it was changed again on June 14, 1960 to the Italian
American Civic Association of Massena, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, The Club house was completed in 1931, built by immigrants
from Italy and a handful of local residents; and
WHEREAS, A private organization, the men of the Italian American Civic
Association prepare terrific meals for themselves and guests every
Thursday night and maintain the tradition of Ladies Night once a month,
when they treat spouses and guests to an authentic Italian feast; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Italian American Civic Association participate
in old world card games and bocce regularly during the year, as younger
men continue their fathers' and grandfathers' social networks, even
though the neighborhood, once almost entirely Italian American, is now
very diverse; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proudly moved to honor and commend
the members of the Italian American Civic Association of Massena, Inc.,
past and present, who have labored so conscientiously to secure and
improve the quality of life for the community it serves; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Italian American Civic Association of Massena, Inc. upon the
occasion of being honored as one of the last social ethnic clubs in
northern New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Italian American Civic Association of Massena, Inc.
