LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the six Roslyn High School Seniors who
were named winners at the 5th Annual Long Island High School Psychology
Fair

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those young people who, by achieving outstanding success in
educational competition, have inspired and brought pride to our majestic
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the six Roslyn High School Seniors who were named winners at the 5th
Annual Long Island High School Psychology Fair, held on Thursday, Janu-
ary 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Arshia Aalami, Ethan Levine, and Daniel Wasserman all
captured Best in Room Honors, while Matthew Borin, Arvind Kumar and
Justin Tepper earned Honorable Mentions; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Wasserman and Matthew Borin competed in the Social
Psychology category; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Wasserman ran a series of three experiments that
looked at how going to a highly selective college affected perceptions
of women's attractiveness; his study revealed that high-achieving men
viewed women who attended top colleges as less attractive than women who
attended less selective schools; and
WHEREAS, Matthew Borin conducted a field study in which he looked at
how the phrasing of requests for a charitable donation impacted how
likely people were to contribute; specifically, he found that requests
that highlighted past donors' average contributions were more effective
than ones that mentioned total past contributions; and
WHEREAS, Ethan Levine and Justin Tepper were placed in the Interdisci-
plinary category; and
WHEREAS, Ethan Levine's study examined the interaction between a poli-
tical candidate's gender and the age of his/her children; he found that
being female and having young children put a person at a significant
disadvantage, both in terms of how they were viewed as a political
candidate and as a parent; and
WHEREAS, Justin Tepper's study looked at the correlations between
masculinity and negative behaviors in high school-age boys; he showed
that masculinity was directly related to expressed homophobia and prom-
iscuity, and inversely related to academic effort and performance; and
WHEREAS, Arshia Aalami and Arvind Kumar competed in the Educational
Psychology category; and
WHEREAS, Arshia Aalami 's study showed that high school girls were
less likely to self-promote in their college essays than high school
boys and that girls who supposedly authored an essay that involved self-
promotion experienced backlash in the form of being seen less likable
and less likely to be admitted to a college; and
WHEREAS, Arvind Kumar's project was an analysis of data regarding
factors that predict students' likelihood to drop out of high school; he
found that including resilience alongside traditional predictors like
parents' education level and socioeconomic status helped increase the
power of the model; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers,
mentors and parents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the six Roslyn High School Seniors who were named winners at the
5th Annual Long Island High School Psychology Fair; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Arshia Aalami, Ethan Levine, Daniel Wasserman, Matthew Borin,
Arvind Kumar and Justin Tepper.
