LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Cayuga
Lake Wine Trail

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those individuals and industries which substantially
contribute to the economic vitality of their communities and the entire
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to celebrate
the 30th Anniversary of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail; and
WHEREAS, Thirty years ago, four wineries along Cayuga Lake knew if
they wanted to increase visitation and stay prosperous they had to build
the area into a destination, thus was born America's first wine trail;
and
WHEREAS, The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail was the first organized and long-
est running wine trail in New York, established in 1983; and
WHEREAS, Since then, the Trail has become a model for other wine
trails both in New York and around the country; and
WHEREAS, With its eastern exposures, Cayuga Lake Wine Trail vineyards
are bathed in early morning sunshine, which helps to ripen their grapes
in the northern, cool-climate region; and
WHEREAS, Vineyard elevations never exceed 800 feet above the lake's
surface and steep slopes run down to its shore, facilitating air
patterns that create a unique microclimate in autumn, creating a perfect
harvest season; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the continuous air flow is helpful in preventing
cold pockets from settling and forming frost on the vines, extending the
growing season to 165-170 days on average, which is three weeks longer
than many other areas in the Finger Lakes region, making Cayuga Lake
truly unique; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is made up of 15 wineries,
one cidery, one meadery and four distilleries producing products made
with the highest set of standards; and
WHEREAS, The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail offers a variety that is unmatched
in wine touring and tasting; nowhere else will travelers experience such
a multitude of premium wines, attractions, comfortable lodgings, fine
restaurants, friendly people, and splendid scenery; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional industry and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
sparkling successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cameron Hosmer, President, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail.
