LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commending  Florence A. Smith School No. 2 upon
the occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary, on May 9, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of  this  Legislative  Body  to  recognize  and
commend  those  institutions  of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate  the  pursuit
of excellence in education and service to the community; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commend
Florence A. Smith School No. 2 upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th
Anniversary, to be celebrated on Friday, May 9, 2014; and
  WHEREAS,  Florence  A.  Smith  School  No.  2, of Oceanside, New York,
opened its doors in 1964, welcoming the elementary school-aged  children
of the families moving to the Oceanside community in droves; and
  WHEREAS,  Named for the long-time principal of its predecessor school,
Florence A. Smith School No. 2 has prospered  under  the  leadership  of
Donald  Maresca,  now  a  Board  of  Education trustee for the Oceanside
School District, and its current principal, Thomas Capone; and
  WHEREAS, The steadfast and unyielding commitment of parents, educators
and administrators to provide the highest quality education for students
is the hallmark and tradition of Florence A. Smith School No. 2; and
  WHEREAS, This venerable institution offers its  students  a  warm  and
enriching  learning  environment  founded in respect, curiosity, and the
desire to excel; in addition to academic endeavors, students at Florence
A. Smith School No. 2 create art, play  musical  instruments,  challenge
their  bodies  in physical education as well as on the playground, raise
funds for a variety of causes, form meaningful relationships with senior
citizens in their community, and host an  annual  conference  day  where
they explore topics important to society; and
  WHEREAS,  The  outstanding  administration at Florence A. Smith School
No. 2 has fostered a learning environment  which  promotes  the  maximum
growth  of  every  student,  enabling  each student to develop the vital
skills necessary to succeed throughout their later school years; and
  WHEREAS, Florence A. Smith School  No.  2  is  proudly  aware  of  its
distinguished  past, eager to fulfill its present commitment to parents,
students and the community, and planning with vision and purpose for the
ebb and swell of growth and change it will encounter  in  the  years  to
come; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Florence A. Smith School No. 2 upon the occasion of  celebrating
its 50th Anniversary; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Thomas Capone, Principal, Florence A. Smith School No. 2.
