LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim the week of June 24-30, 2012 as International Bangla Festival
Week in the State of New York

WHEREAS, The 21st Bangla Festival, which grew out of the traditional
book fair organized by Muktadhara since 1992, is the largest gathering
of Bangla language and literature enthusiasts outside the sub-continent;
and
WHEREAS, The Bangla Festival brings together more than one thousand
delegates from different states as well as other countries; more than
10,000 Bangla speakers who live in New York and other North American
states attend the event to enjoy music, books and cultural interaction
with leading writers and artists from the sub-continent; and
WHEREAS, For two decades, Muktadhara, an international organization,
publishing house, and bookstore dedicated to the promotion of Bengali
literature and culture, has celebrated Bengali history, language, and
culture by hosting the International Bangla Festival; and
WHEREAS, Journalists, industrialists, bankers and IT specialists will
participate in the 21st International Bangla Festival; in addition to
seminars, workshops and musical presentations, the festival will include
stalls displaying books, real estate, music and handicrafts; and
WHEREAS, Opening in New York City, the festival will travel to three
other cities in the United States; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim the week of June 24-30,
2012 as International Bangla Festival Week in the State of New York; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nasimun Nahar Nini, Convener of the International Bangla
Festival and Book Fair 2012; Bishawjit Saha, President of the Muktadhara
Foundation; and to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State
of New York.
