LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing National Train Day and the many bene fits the Railroad brings to our State and Nation WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those note worthy organizations within the United States and this great Empire State whose focus and intent have made a substantial impact on the qual ity of life in their communities; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize National Train Day and the many benefits the Railroad brings to our State and Nation; and WHEREAS, On Friday, May 7, 2010, the National Train Day celebration will take place at New York's Penn Station with actor and avid train fan Taye Diggs; he will throw the switch that launches an edible trainscape made from elaborate confections and moving model trains; the display is inspired by this year's National Train Day artwork, and will include a model train installation by Bachmann Trains; and WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 8, 2010, the 3rd Annual National Train Day will be a free coast-to-coast celebration; the largest events will take place in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and there will also be a chance to tour private and Amtrak train cars, explore interactive and educational exhibits, and enjoy live enter tainment; and WHEREAS, National Train Day is a holiday started by Amtrak in the year as a method to teach the general public about the advantages of rail travel and the history of trains; events are held at Amtrak stations as well as railroad museums throughout the country and often have passenger cars and model railroad layouts on display; and WHEREAS, National Train Day marks 141 years of connecting travelers coast to coast; on May 10, 1869, in Promontory, Utah, the "golden spike" was driven into the final tie that joined 1,776 miles of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, transforming America by creating the Nation's first transcontinental railroad; and WHEREAS, This monumental event united the country and provided adven ture for businessmen who saw fortunes to be made, created jobs for thou sands of Americans, and sparked the creative imaginations of storytel lers in songs, movies, and novels; and WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body commends Railroads nationwide for their excellence and for their commitment and contributions to the communities they have so ably served; now, there fore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to recognize National Train Day and the many benefits the Railroad brings to our State and Nation; and be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to Amtrak's National Train Day Planning Committee, and Bachmann Trains.
