LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the Asian-American community's
celebration of the Lunar New Year, 4711, the Year of the Snake, on
February 10, 2013

WHEREAS, With due cause and proper resolve, this Legislative Body honors
the Asian-American community of the State of New York as it celebrates
the Lunar New Year; and
WHEREAS, According to legend, Buddha invited the animals of the world
to visit him, rewarding those who came by naming a year in their honor;
each animal in turn gave its characteristics to the people born in its
year; and
WHEREAS, According to popular story, the order of the Zodiac was
decided by a great race in which the snake chose to be frugal with its
effort and ride on the leg of the horse only to jump in front of it at
the end; and
WHEREAS, The Asian-American community joyously ushers in the Year of
the Snake, 4711 on February 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, People born in the Year of the Snake are characterized by a
strong endurance and willpower, reinforced by a strong work ethic and
decision making skills; and
WHEREAS, Those born under the sign of the Snake enjoy a love of
elegance and the arts, they seek out the beautiful sounds of music and
the sensual scenery of the environment around them; and
WHEREAS, The Snake is known for a sense of diligence that is often
applied to money in that it is usually lucky enough to own all that it
needs; and
WHEREAS, Even in during a difficult period in their lives, those born
in the Year of the Snake exhibit the ability to make light of the situ-
ation and recognize their faults; and
WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year, the most important and most popular of
Asian festivals, exemplifies the rich and diverse cultural traditions of
Asian-Americans; and
WHEREAS, New York State is blessed with many citizens of Asian
descent; they are distinguished by their excellence and their contrib-
utions to all fields of endeavor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to honor all the citizens of
New York State of Asian ancestry, joining with them in welcoming the
Year of the Snake, 4711 on February 10, 2013; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Lunar New Year celebration in New York City on February
10, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to distinguished members of the Asian-American community.
