Honoring Basil Capetanakis upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 2014 Civic Award by the Bay Ridge Community Council

LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring Basil Capetanakis upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the 2014 Civic Award by  the  Bay  Ridge
Community Council

WHEREAS,  A great community is only as great as those persons and organ-
izations that provide exemplary service, whether  through  participation
in  voluntary  programs,  through  unique  personal achievement in their
profession or other endeavors, or simply  through  a  lifetime  of  good
citizenship; and
  WHEREAS,  This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Basil Cape-
tanakis, upon the occasion of being named winner of the 2014 Civic Award
by the Bay Ridge Community Council; he will be honored at its 63rd Annu-
al Dinner Dance on Thursday, June 5, 2014; and
  WHEREAS, The Bay Ridge Community Council is an  umbrella  organization
composed of nearly 100 civic groups, whose goal is to improve the quali-
ty of life for residents in the Brooklyn, New York, neighborhoods of Bay
Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Fort Hamilton; and
  WHEREAS, The Bay Ridge Community Council Civic Award is given annually
to  an  individual who has a passion for improving life for those around
them, while at the same time capturing the unique spirit of  Bay  Ridge;
  WHEREAS, Basil Capetanakis has been called upon to contribute his time
and  talents  to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and
  WHEREAS, Basil Capetanakis was born in Sparta, Greece in 1930; he  and
his  family  immigrated  to  the  United  States in 1946, and eventually
settled in Park Slope; and
  WHEREAS, After graduating from  Manual  Training  High  School,  Basil
Capetanakis  attended Brooklyn College, while also starting the first of
many businesses with his family, a popular restaurant in Park Slope; and
  WHEREAS, This esteemed man served his country honorably as a member of
the United States Army during the Korean War, joining his brother  James
in the Fourth Infantry in Germany; and
  WHEREAS,  Following his honorable discharge in 1955, Basil Capetanakis
rejoined his family business  and  completed  his  studies  at  Brooklyn
College,  graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science
in 1959; he then  completed  graduate  coursework  in  the  Real  Estate
Program at Baruch College, and began his long and successful real estate
career; and
  WHEREAS,  In  1972,  Basil  Capetanakis founded 14 Apollo Real Estate,
which he named after the Apollo space mission; since then, he has been a
fixture in the real estate industry, particularly in Bay Ridge and  Park
Slope,  where he became a Director of the Board of Realtors and Multiple
Listing Service; and
  WHEREAS, Dedicated to community service,  Basil  Capetanakis  is  past
president  of both Brooklyn's AHEPA Chapter 41 and the parish council of
Kimisis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Chairman of Community Board 10,
and a member of Fort Hamilton's Citizen Action Committee; in addition he
is a founding member of the Soterios Ellenas Parochial  School  and  the
5th Avenue Business Improvement District; and
  WHEREAS,  Throughout  his successful 50 year career, Basil Capetanakis
has received numerous awards  from  religious,  political,  and  secular
organizations,  including the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor, the
Silver Beaver Award; and
  WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period  of  his  community  service,  a
period of constructive involvement, Basil Capetanakis has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and

  WHEREAS,  With  him throughout have been his wife, Angeline, his three
children, Charles (Dena), John (Elissa) and Maria (Tony), as well as his
nine grandsons, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
  WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual  for  the  benefit of others which this remarkable man has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commend Basil Capetanakis upon the occasion of being named winner of the
2014 Civic Award by the Bay Ridge Community Council; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Basil Capetanakis.
