LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Lynbrook
Baptist Church, to be celebrated in July of 2014

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and  the  many  spiritual,  social  and
educational  benefits  they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
  WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State  and  this  Nation  to  pay
tribute  to  those  institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes  pleasure  in  commemorating  the
100th  Anniversary  of Lynbrook Baptist Church, to be celebrated in July
of 2014; and
  WHEREAS, On November 24, 1913, a group of 16 Baptists met in the  home
of  Mr.  and  Mrs. W. L. Philips on Noble Street to discuss organizing a
Baptist Church; on February 11, 1914, they held the first business meet-
ing; and
  WHEREAS, Four days later, Mechanics Hall on Atlantic Avenue was  rent-
ed;  Lynbrook  Baptist  Church  scheduled its first service for March 1,
1914, but was canceled due to a snow storm; the first Sunday service was
then held on March 29, 1914, followed by the first  Sunday  School  held
October 4th; and
  WHEREAS,  The  church's  present  lot  was given to the New York State
Baptist Missionary Council by the estate of Margaret Fryer; the original
building, first built in 1891 on 5th Street, Valley  Stream,  New  York,
behind Brooklyn Avenue School, was disassembled and reassembled in 1918;
and
  WHEREAS,  On  March  17, 1923, the church was incorporated as Lynbrook
Baptist Church; in 1959, the present building was built; and
  WHEREAS, The Charter members included: Mr. and Mrs. W.A.  Bruce,  W.A.
Bruce Jr., Mrs. Isadore Dodds, Mrs. Clara Driscoll, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Fowler, Florence Flower, Harold Flower, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Gardiner, Miss
C.E.  Groth,  Mr.  and Mrs. C.J. Hanson, Mrs. G.E. Hayword, Mr. and Mrs.
A.L. Helmes, Mrs. Lydia Johnson, Mr. and Mrs.  W.C.  Lahman,  Mrs.  J.W.
Lounsberry,  Mrs. Anna E. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. George Morgan, Mrs. Emily
Pray, Charles Pray, Prescott Pray, Mrs. Fredericka Rosche, Mr. and  Mrs.
R.V. Turner, and Mr. and Mrs. F.B. Wheldon; and
  WHEREAS,  Under  the  luminous direction of Reverend Robert Walderman,
Lynbrook Baptist Church stands on the threshold of tomorrow, prepared to
meet the challenges of the coming decades while retaining that spiritual
resolve which characterizes its past; and
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body  to  take  note  of
enduring  religious  institutions  and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  100th  Anniversary  of  Lynbrook  Baptist Church to be
observed in July  of  2014,  fully  confident  that  this  commemoration
reflects  the  belief  in  those  values  which  enhance the dignity and
purpose of life; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Reverend Robert Walderman, Lynbrook Baptist Church.
