LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Firefighter Al Tremper upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition after 75 years of dedi-
cated service to the Walker Valley Fire Department

WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend Firefighter Al
Tremper upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
after 75 years of dedicated service to the Walker Valley Fire Depart-
ment, to be celebrated on Saturday, March 9, 2013; and
WHEREAS, For three-quarters of a century, Al Tremper has exhibited
unyielding, untiring, and distinguished dedication and service to the
Walker Valley Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, On November 15, 1938, on his 21st birthday, Al Tremper became
a member of the Walker Valley Chemical Engine Company No. 1; this was
toward the end of the Great Depression, three years before the start of
WW II; and
WHEREAS, In 1942, Al Tremper took a military leave of absence from the
Walker Valley Chemical Engine Company and left his community to join his
comrades to fight for our country in the European theater; after the end
of World War II, he returned as a veteran of the United States, back to
his roots on the family farm in the Hamlet of Crawford and to his Fire
Company; and
WHEREAS, Al Tremper became Financial Secretary of the Walker Valley
Fire Company in 1954; he served in this prestigious role for 53 years
through 2006; and
WHEREAS, With Al Tremper being the oldest living member of the Walker
Valley Fire Company, both he and his wife, Peg, have four sons, James,
Charles, Martin and Philip who followed the tradition and are also
members of the Walker Valley Fire Company; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; Al
Tremper is such a firefighter; throughout 75 years of devoted service,
this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter Al Tremper upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition after 75 years of dedicated service to the Walker
Valley Fire Department; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Al Tremper.
