LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Port Jervis Bowl upon the occasion of
celebrating its 70th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
small businesses within the State of New York which contribute to the
economic health and vitality of the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Port Jervis Bowl upon the occasion of celebrating its 70th Anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, Owned by the Curabba family, Port Jervis Bowl, on West Main
Street in Port Jervis, New York, was also recognized as Business of the
Week in February 2013; and
WHEREAS, Port Jervis Bowl was built in 1943, by the Truex family and
later managed by Nick Gallandorn, in the mid-1950s; the Curabba family
bought the building, and the business was run by the Juarez family until
1964, when the Curabba family took over running the business; and
WHEREAS, In March 1972, Fred Hammond took over as manager of Port
Jervis Bowl, and remains as manager today; and
WHEREAS, In its early days, from 1943-1959, Port Jervis Bowl's bowling
function was operated by pin boys; in August 1959 automatic pinsetters
were installed; and
WHEREAS, Many local bowlers have come up the ranks from the Junior
bowling leagues, cosponsored for many years by the Port Jervis Recre-
ation Department, to bowl in the adult men's, women's and mixed leagues
through the years; and
WHEREAS, Port Jervis Bowl is currently home to many leagues including
the Monday Afternoon Women's League, Wednesday Night City Men's League,
Thursday Night Women's League, Saturday and Sunday Junior Leagues, and
an informal Tuesday Afternoon Senior Bowling League; and
WHEREAS, Small businesses such as Port Jervis Bowl exert a strong,
positive influence on the communities they serve and are a crucial
element in the economy of New York State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Port Jervis Bowl upon the occasion of celebrating its 70th Anni-
versary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Port Jervis Bowl.
