LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Minoa
Fire Department

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the  100th
Anniversary  of  the  Minoa Fire Department and to honor all of its past
and present members for providing the citizens  of  the  Minoa  District
with 100 years of excellent fire protection; and
  WHEREAS,  Volunteer fire departments are an integral part of community
protection in localities across this great Empire State; and
  WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, the courageous  and  dedicated  fire-
fighters  of  the Minoa Fire Department have valiantly volunteered their
time to respond to various fire emergencies, while  earning  the  praise
and respect of the community which they serve; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Minoa Fire Department was formed three months after the
Village of Minoa was incorporated on January  12,  1913;  Minoa's  first
fire  station  was  named  "S.E.Terwilliger"  after  the village's first
mayor; the first alarm system was a large iron gong; and
  WHEREAS, In 1925, a Model A Ford truck with chemical tanks  was  added
to  the  department;  one  year  later,  two garages were built, two new
Buffalo pumpers were purchased and a utility truck with modern first aid
equipment was added; this equipment served the department's needs  until
1953, when they were replaced by more modern technology; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Minoa  Fire  Department has been a volunteer department
since 1913; it presently operates out of two stations with four  engines
and a dedicated staff of 45 active and 50 life member volunteers; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Minoa  Fire  Department  provides  protection  for five
schools located in the East Syracuse-Minoa Central School  District  and
responds  to  emergencies  involving  Minoa  Lakes  and part of the Erie
Canal; it  also  provides  the  grateful  residents  living  within  the
district  with many emergency and non-emergency services, including fire
suppression, fire prevention, hazardous material management, vehicle and
other rescue, water rescue,  residential  lock-outs,  emergency  vehicle
lock-outs,  commercial fire inspections and basic life support emergency
medical services; and
  WHEREAS, Each day, the brave  volunteer  members  of  the  Minoa  Fire
Department  prepare  to  risk their lives in order to selflessly protect
the life and property of all those living within their community; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body cannot express sufficient gratitude  to
those trained and devoted individuals who serve and protect their commu-
nities  through  volunteer  fire  departments  across  this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
proudly  commemorate  the 100th Anniversary of the Minoa Fire Department
to be celebrated with an official ceremony on April 27, 2013; and be  it
further
  RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted  to  the  Chief of the Minoa Fire Department, Fire Chief Matthew
McGarrity, and President Dennis Erard.
