LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Bernadette Casey Smith upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition by Tomorrow's Hope Foundation

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith has given not only of her time and
energies but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Bernadette
Casey Smith upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by Tomorrow's Hope Foundation, to be celebrated at its Stars for
Students Scholarship Gala on Friday, May 21, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Bernadette Casey Smith has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith, daughter of the late William J.
Casey, former Director of Central Intelligence, and Sophia Casey, is a
graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Brentwood and Good Counsel College
in White Plains; she was honored by Saint Patrick's College at Maynooth,
Ireland, with a PhD in Philosophy Honors Causa; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith has followed several life paths being
active in theater and pursued numerous philanthropic activities; after
college, she studied under Betty Cashman, a famous drama coach and was
involved in numerous soap operas, television commercials and profes-
sional theater; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith is Chair of the William and Sophia
Casey Foundation; in addition, she has or is serving on numerous boards
of directors including the Irish Educational Development Foundation
(Secretary), The Henry Viscardi School at the National Center for Disa-
bility Services, the Veterans of the Office of Strategic Services where
she served as Vice Chair, the William J. Donovan Foundation and the
National Historical Intelligence Museum; and
WHEREAS, Bernadette Casey Smith also serves on the Advisory Committee
of New Yorkers for Choice in Education and is a member of the Board of
Trustees of Young Americans for Freedom; she is a member of St. Mary's
parish in Roslyn, and is a Dame of Malta and Holy Sepulchre; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Owen, who feels
privileged to be a part of her life and rejoices in her achievements;
and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Bernadette Casey Smith has displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Bernadette Casey Smith upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by Tomorrow's Hope Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bernadette Casey Smith.
