LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Ex-Chief Nicholas Martone
of the Mineola Fire Department, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Chief Nicholas Martone died on February 11, 2013, at the age
of 83; he was the most senior ex-chief in the Mineola Fire Department
and the patriarch of a fire service family; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Martone was a lifelong resident of the Village of
Mineola, attending Mineola schools, running a business in the village
and raising his family there as well; he joined Engine Company Three of
the Mineola Fire Department in 1950; and
WHEREAS, As an enlisted member of the United States Navy, Nicholas
Martone had to leave his service to the village to serve his country
when he was called in 1951 during the Korean War; after serving in the
military, he returned in 1953 and went back to operate the family busi-
ness, Martone's Garage; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Martone was an active firefighter and a strong advo-
cate for his fellow firefighters; these distinct qualities gave way to
his election as Warden from 1954-1958; in 1958, he was elected Second
Lieutenant of Engine Three and after two years as Lieutenant, he was
elected Captain in 1960; and
WHEREAS, This leadership experience gave Nicholas Martone the confi-
dence and support of the department as he sought to enter the Chief's
office in 1962; serving for four years as as Assistant Chief from
1962-1966, he worked many major fires and continued to lead the depart-
ment; in 1966, he was elected by his peers to become Chief of the
Department; and
WHEREAS, After completing his time in the Chief's office Chief Nicho-
las Martone remained an active part of the administration of the Mineola
Fire Department; through the 1970s and 1980s, he was elected multiple
times to represent his company as a Warden on the Fire Council along
with serving as department treasurer and company trustee; and
WHEREAS, Chief Nicholas Martone prided himself as one of the charter
advisors for the Mineola Junior Fire Department, which has become a
world-renowned success; with an unprecedented 62 years of active service
in the Mineola Fire Department, he provided wisdom and insight that
spanned many generations; and
WHEREAS, Chief Nicholas Martone was predeceased by his wife, Rosemary,
and is survived by their children, Cathy, Drew, Nancy, Nicky, and Carol,
their grandchildren, Andrew, Melissa, Joe, Lex, Shannon, Nicholas II,
Erikalyn, Morgan, Nick and Stephen, as well as a host of nieces and
nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with the sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Chief Nicholas Martone
leaves behind a great legacy which will long endure the passage of time
and will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Ex-Chief Nicholas Martone of the Mineola Fire Depart-
ment, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Chief Nicholas Martone.
