LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Edgar Lichstein, M.D., upon the occasion
of his designation for special recognition by the Medical Society of the
County of Kings, Inc., and the Academy of Medicine of Brooklyn

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community and their profession; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Edgar Lich-
stein, M.D., upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion by the Medical Society of the County of Kings, Inc., and the Acade-
my of Medicine of Brooklyn on March 6, 2013, in Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, This special event has been designated as Doctors Recognition
Day which will be held at Giando on the Water; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lichstein completed his internal medicine training at
Lenox Hill Hospital and New York University; he also completed a
Cardiology Fellowship at NYU and served as Captain and Chief Cardiolo-
gist at the Wright Patterson United States Air Force Base in Dayton,
Ohio; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lichstein was brought to Maimonides Medical Center in
1976 and, given a mandate to develop the Cardiology Division, he staffed
the division with full-time faculty creating a corps of experts with
in-depth knowledge and proficiency in all aspects of cardiac care; and
WHEREAS, As Chair of Medicine of the Department of Medicine at Maimon-
ides Medical Center, Dr. Lichstein has continued to innovate, for exam-
ple, enhancing the supervision of medical residents by instituting the
Firm Director system and appointing full-time certified internists to
work with the Medical Center's graduate physicians; and
WHEREAS, Well-known and highly regarded in his profession, Dr. Lich-
stein has served as Chairman of the American Heart Association's Commit-
tee on Smoking, Heart Information Services, and Council on Community
Programs; he also served as Chairman of the Committee on Government
Affairs/Public Policy and is currently a member of the Governor's Coun-
cil on Graduate Medical Education; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Lichstein has authored many articles and
publications in the field of Cardiology and has served on the editorial
boards of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NONINVASIVE CARDIOLOGY, the JOURNAL OF
THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY and the JOURNAL OF GERIATRIC CARDIOL-
OGY; and
WHEREAS, Serving as Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical
Center, Dr. Lichstein has fittingly been honored many times for his
exemplary service and many accomplishments in his profession; among the
many prestigious awards he has earned are the United Jewish Appeal's
Award of Honor, the Physician of the Year Award from both the Guardians
of the Sick and the Council of Neighborhood Organizations, and the Anti-
Defamation League's esteemed Torch of Liberty award; and
WHEREAS, With Dr. Lichstein throughout have been his wife Marilyn,
their son Adam and his wife Becky, their daughter Amy and her husband
Scott, their four grandsons, Will, Ellis, Jake and Ryen, and their
granddaughters Tayt and Nell, all of whom are proud to be part of his
life and rejoice in his many achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession merit the highest commendation and the recognition and appre-
ciation of those who have benefited from their service; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edgar Lichstein, M.D., upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Medical Society of the County of Kings, Inc.,
and the Academy of Medicine of Brooklyn; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Edgar Lichstein, M.D.
