LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Met Council upon the occasion of its
40th Anniversary Celebration on April 25, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize organiza-
tions of commitment and high achievement whose purpose and endeavor are
dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in its communities, and to the
development of responsible citizens and community leaders; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize
and commend Met Council upon the occasion of its 40th Anniversary Cele-
bration to be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Manhattan's Upper
East Side; and
WHEREAS, From its inception in the early 1970s, as a response to
academic studies stating that approximately 300,000 impoverished Jews
resided in New York City, Met Council quickly formed to help the poor
and working poor with more than just a temporary handout of food; and
WHEREAS, Over the past four decades, Met Council has established
itself in the communities it serves, providing valuable support services
in crises of evictions, loss of income, health emergencies, immigration
problems, or family violence, and most importantly keeping families
together; and
WHEREAS, In the 1990 partnership with Jewish Community Relations Coun-
cil and the UJA-Federation of New York, Met Council strives to preserve
the decaying Jewish neighborhoods and provides affordable housing with
the openings of the Weinberg Council Towers in Brooklyn and the Bronx,
Abraham Residence I and II in Brooklyn, and the Metro House in the
Bronx; and
WHEREAS, After recent economic times dealing with hardships in unfore-
seeable job loss, Met Council's legacy of support expanded with a Career
Services Center, helping to revitalize communities in New York by
providing experienced employment specialists to assist low to moderate
income people in need of a job or wanting to advance their careers; and
WHEREAS, With the rising generations benefiting from its abilities to
assist in their needs during childhood, Met Council forges ahead, look-
ing to the future to ensure continued support for everyone in their MVP
program, recruiting young professionals in their 20s and 30s to push on
the mission of fighting poverty through volunteering, providing families
with financial support, and spreading the word; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Met Council upon the occasion of its 40th Anniversary Cele-
bration to be held on April 25, 2013, in Manhattan's Upper East Side;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Met Council.
