LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the New York State Historical Associ-
ation upon the occasion of hosting its New York State History Day compe-
tition

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions which devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the New York State Historical Association upon the occasion of hosting
its New York State History Day competition on Monday, April 29, 2013;
and
WHEREAS, The New York State Historical Association is proud to be the
state sponsor of National History Day, a yearlong educational program
that encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world
history; after selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual
theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives,
museums, and oral history interviews; they analyze and interpret their
findings, draw conclusions about their topics' significance in history,
and create final projects that present their work; and
WHEREAS, These special projects, which include historical papers,
documentaries, performances, tabletop exhibits, and websites, can be
entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national
level, where they are evaluated by professional historians and educa-
tors; and
WHEREAS, On the day of the competition, over 450 students from across
New York State will come to Cooperstown to take part in New York State
History Day; in order to participate in this event, students achieved
top scores at earlier school and regional contests; winners from the
state contest will be eligible to represent New York at the National
History Day competition in College Park, Maryland, on June 9 -13, 2013;
and
WHEREAS, These students will go home with a better appreciation of
their heritage and essential critical thinking and research skills that
will help them succeed in college and in life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the New York State Historical Association upon the occasion of
hosting its New York State History Day competition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sarah Loveland, New York State History Day Competition Manag-
er.
