LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Herman and Devera (Deb) Ungerman upon
the occasion of their designation as recipients of a Sidney Albert Alba-
ny Jewish Community Center Pillars of the Community Award on April 14,
2013

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lies, personal endeavors, and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, family, and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Herman and Devera (Deb) Ungerman upon the occasion of their designation
as recipients of a Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center Pillars
of the Community Award at the Center's 13th Annual Pillars of the Commu-
nity Awards Brunch to be held on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Albany's
Congregation Beth Emeth; and
WHEREAS, The Pillars of the Community Award is presented to individ-
uals who have made exceptional contributions to the Center and/or to the
Jewish community at-large through education, service, and acts of kind-
ness; and
WHEREAS, Herman and Deb Ungerman truly merit such recognition; and
WHEREAS, Herman and Deb Ungerman are native Albanians with a rich and
dutiful commitment to family and community; with selfless devotion to
community spanning more than 50 years, including numerous leadership
positions and a generous spirit, the Ungermans are true pillars of the
community; and
WHEREAS, Herm and Deb graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in
1949; Herm served in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict
and was honorably discharged in 1956; he subsequently formed and oper-
ated a family-owned electrical contracting business - Herm Ungerman,
Inc.; Deb retired in 1994 after working 32 years for the State of New
York, retiring as Executive Secretary to the Chairman of the New York
State Division of Parole; and
WHEREAS, Herm Ungerman's leadership in the community is of exceptional
note and includes serving on the board of Congregation Beth Abraham
Jacob; he is a current member of its board and served three terms as its
President; he is also a Past President of the Jewish Federation of
Northeastern New York; he was, in addition, Chairman of the Federation's
Foundation and a valued and active member of many of the Federation's
board committees; and
WHEREAS, Herm Ungerman also served several terms as President of
Jewish Family Services and the Daughters of Sarah Foundation; he was, in
addition, the Chancellor Commander of Albany City Lodge #540 of the
Knights of Pithias, President of the Optimist Club of Albany and B'nai
B'rith Gideon Lodge and Chairman of the Jewish Federation's Annual
Campaign; and
WHEREAS, Many other organizations welcomed and valued Herm Ungerman's
board service as well, including the Hebrew Academy; the Albany Jewish
Community Center; Parson's Child and Family Center; United Way of North-
eastern New York; the Chapel House Interfaith Center at SUNY Albany; the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America; the Albany Senior Service
Center Foundation; Hope House; and Jewish War Veterans Post #105's Exec-
utive Committee; and

WHEREAS, Herm Ungerman has fittingly been the recipient of numerous
awards, including the Leukemia Society Man of the Year Award; the David
Ben-Gurion Israel Bonds Award; the B'nai B'rith Covenant Award; the Hope
House Recognition Award; the Four Chaplains Brotherhood Award; a Fifty
Years of Dedicated Service to Our Community Award and a Communal Recog-
nition Award from Yeshiva University; and
WHEREAS, Devoted in marriage for 58 years, Herm Ungerman and Deb
Proskin Ungerman are the proud parents of Susan Ungerman and Michelle
Sanders and the blessed grandparents of seven grandchildren; and, Herm
and Deb are devoted and valued members of Congregation Beth Abraham
Jacob; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their professional and commu-
nity service, a period of constructive involvement, Herman and Devera
(Deb) Ungerman have stood constant in dignity, good grace, and humor and
have earned the respect and admiration of their colleagues, family and
friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Herman and Deb Ungerman have displayed
throughout their lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That is Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor
Herman and Devera (Deb) Ungerman upon the occasion of their designation
as recipients of a Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center Pillars
of the Community Award on April 14, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Herman and Devera Ungerman.
