LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority upon the occasion of celebrating its more
than 50 years of public service

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals that are devoted to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority upon
the occasion of celebrating its more than 50 years of public service;
and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority was chartered on October 31, 1959; and
WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of
the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has upheld the sorority's tradition of
public service to the community through programs that initiate social
change, encourage academic excellence and elevate cultural awareness,
based on the organization's five point programmatic thrust: economic
development, educational development, international awareness and
involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and
involvement; and
WHEREAS, The Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
recognizes the quality social, political, educational, and arts programs
in the demographically diverse Westchester County, New York; perpetuates
the charter members' vision by creating, developing, and executing inno-
vative, timely and relevant programs that benefit the community; and
WHEREAS, Historically, the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority has implanted innovative programs that have become
national sorority initiatives; it was the first chapter to host first
weekend screenings of feature films made by and about people of African
descent; it annually holds a "Toast to Spring" scholarship brunch; and
its members are active participants at the sorority's regional and
national levels; and
WHEREAS, Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta is an award
winning chapter, it won the Eastern Region Chapter of the Year Award
(2007) and earned national recognition with the National Council of
Negro Women Mary McLeod Bethune Award (2006); and
WHEREAS, In addition, the local and international activism efforts of
the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta have received
acclaim; and
WHEREAS, With a membership of nearly 200, the Westchester Alumnae
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta under the leadership of its President,
Margaret Bing-Wade, continues its commitment to developing and imple-
menting quality, ground breaking programs that effectively meet the
needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Westchester
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to call attention to
organizations such as the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, which serve to bring people together for the united
purpose of actively pursuing improvements in their communities; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
upon the occasion of celebrating its more than 50 years of public
service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorori-
ty.
