LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Marianna Murray O'Connor upon the occa-
sion of her designation as Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge
St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 24, 2013

WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities and
generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of
the Irish people throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides opportunity for
people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Marianna Murray O'Connor upon the occasion of her designation as Deputy
Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade to be held
on Sunday, March 24, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Marianna Murray O'Connor was born and raised in Bay Ridge;
her parents were Peter and Theresa Kane Murray; and
WHEREAS, Her father was born and raised in Tuam, County Galway and her
maternal grandparents were born in the County Armagh; proud of her Irish
heritage, Marianna Murray O'Connor has visited the "Murray Farm" in
Ireland many times throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, Marianna has fond childhood memories of the Kane family gath-
erings in Bay Ridge, which always included playing old 78 Irish records
on the victrola and waltzing around the parlor; and
WHEREAS, Her parents were beautiful Irish waltzers who met at a dance
at the Leitrim House on 59th Street in Manhattan in the early 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Marianna Murray O'Connor attended Saint Ephrem's Grammar
School and Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School; after graduating from
the Wood Secretarial School, she worked as a legal secretary in Manhat-
tan for 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Marianna Murray O'Connor received her Bachelors degree from
Saint Joseph's College; and
WHEREAS, In January of 1988, Marianna Murray O'Connor entered the NYPD
Police Academy and worked on patrol in Brooklyn in the 61 and 67
Precincts as well as the Brooklyn South Task Force until her promotion
to Sergeant in December of 1996; and
WHEREAS, After a year as patrol supervisor in the 76 Precinct, Marian-
na Murray O'Connor was transferred to the Employee Management Division
of the Personnel Bureau to help start up a new unit where police offi-
cers work off-duty in uniform for private companies; she remained in the
Paid Detail Unit until her retirement in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Marianna Murray O'Connor has always been a proud and active
member of both the Irish and Bay Ridge communities; now a Lifetime
member of BRAVO Volunteer Ambulance Service, she volunteered for 20
years, from 1982 to 2002, as a New York State Certified Emergency
Medical Technician, Dispatcher, Board of Director, and served on various
other committees within the organization; and
WHEREAS, Marianna Murray O'Connor joined the NYPD Emerald Society in
1988, and served as a Delegate, Board Trustee, Corresponding Secretary,
Vice President Manhattan South and Financial Secretary until her retire-
ment in 2009; and
WHEREAS, From 2004-2006, Marianna Murray O'Connor was the President of
Saint Ephrem's Rosary Society, and still remains active today; and
WHEREAS, Since 2007, Marianna Murray O'Connor has been a member of the
Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Division No. 22 in Bay Ridge; and

WHEREAS, She met the love of her life, Matty O'Connor, now a retired
NYPD sergeant, when they worked together in the Brooklyn South Task
Force; the couple has been happily married for five years; and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay
Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade, Marianna Murray O'Connor embodies the
spirit and the cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this
great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Marianna Murray O'Connor upon the occasion of her designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marianna Murray O'Connor.
