LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  mourning  the  death  of  Herbert Otto Schulze,
retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force and  devoted  member
of his community

WHEREAS,  It  is  the  practice  of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
those outstanding individuals who have gone before us, and  who  distin-
guished  themselves  in  their  professional  and personal lives through
their unwavering passion, dedication and  substantial  contributions  to
their communities and this great Empire State; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is moved to mourn  the  death
of  Herbert  Otto Schulze, retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air
Force, in March of 2013, and to remember his lifetime  of  achievements;
and
  WHEREAS,  Lt.  Col.  Herbert  Otto Schulze was raised in Syracuse, New
York; he joined the United States Army Air Corps as a  flying  cadet  in
1939,  and  was appointed to the position of 2nd Lieutenant in the Army-
Air Corps; and
  WHEREAS, During his 22 years of dedicated military service,  Lt.  Col.
Herbert Otto Schulze completed various assignments in the United States,
England, Germany, and Japan; and
  WHEREAS,  As a squadron commander and deputy group commander in a B-17
bomber group during World War II, Lt.  Col.  Herbert  Otto  Schulze  was
cited  for  outstanding leadership in 29 combat missions; he was awarded
the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four  oak  leaf  clus-
ters; and
  WHEREAS, In 1948, Lt. Col. Herbert Otto Schulze was assigned Inspector
General  of  the  Berlin Airlift at Rhein-Main Air Force Base, until the
mission was successfully accomplished; and
  WHEREAS, Following his retirement from the United States Air Force  in
1961,  Lt.  Col. Herbert Otto Schulze graduated from Syracuse University
and entered the teaching  profession;  he  taught  German  and  American
History  for  the  North  Syracuse  School  District  until 1979 when he
retired from teaching; and
  WHEREAS, Among his  many  activities  and  accomplishments,  Lt.  Col.
Herbert  Otto Schulze played in the first violin section of the Onondaga
Symphony Orchestra, was a  lifetime  member  of  Holy  Trinity  Catholic
Church, and was actively involved in local government; and
  WHEREAS,  As  a  leader  within  the  community, Lt. Col. Herbert Otto
Schulze always remained true to his principles and vocal in the  preser-
vation  of  the  Constitution,  demonstrating  intelligence, passion and
outstanding character; and
  WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Herbert Otto Schulze  was  a  respected  leader  and
mentor  within  the Central New York community whose positive attributes
and contributions will have a long-lasting impact on  society;  he  also
leaves  behind  a legacy of pride and patriotism to his driving force in
life, his family; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
mourn  the  death  of  Herbert Otto Schulze, retired Lieutenant Colonel,
United States Air Force and devoted member of his community; and  be  it
further
  RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the daughters of Lt. Col. Herbert Otto Schulze, Karin Schulze
and Patricia Zangari.
