ATIVE RESOLUTION commending the students of H. Frank Carey High who participated in an event to benefit disadvantaged children in wn, Sierra Leone S, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay e to those young people within the great Empire State who have trong contributions to their communities and who serve as role for their peers; and EAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- ng traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend tudents of H. Frank Carey High School who participated in an event efit disadvantaged children in Freetown, Sierra Leone; and EAS, On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, H. Frank Carey High School students ipated in an ice cream fundraiser to raise money for disadvantaged children in Freetown, a small village in Sierra Leone; and EAS, Salifu Kamara, a former child soldier and current student at an University in Washington, DC, inspired Carey students Alexandra and Alexandra Kadell to help coordinate this fundraiser for the e of rebuilding Freetown; and EAS, During a video conference hosted by 21st Century Scholars and an University, Salifu Kamara told Carey students his compelling of survival which provided him with motivation and inspiration, ally allowing him to receive a scholarship to study at American sity; and EAS, Grateful for his opportunity to further his education in the States, Salifu Kamara told Carey students about his dream to d Freetown and present children of the village with the opportu- o receive an education; and EAS, Salifu explained to the students that education is one of the owerful means to restore his village and keep children out of way; and EAS, In response to Salifu's story, Alexandra Bieler and Alexandra and the Voices Unheard club, as well as many other exceptional ts, intervened and took up the challenge to fulfill Salifu's dream se money for school children in his village, directing efforts to e essential school supplies, such as pens, pencils, books, desks, airs, that schools in Freetown lack; and EAS, With every scoop of ice cream sold, students created paper houses and paper children, hanging them in the hallways of Carey chool to spread awareness for their cause; and EAS, The benevolence of these exceptional students turned tragedy ope, and despair into happiness; and EAS, With their sense of civic duty and their commitment to , the students of H. Frank Carey High School represent the best pment of the potential which is inherent in our most precious ce, our youth; now, therefore, be it LVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to d the students of H. Frank Carey High School who participated in nt to benefit disadvantaged children in Freetown, Sierra Leone; it further LVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- d to H. Frank Carey High School, and Student Leaders Alexandra and Alexandra Kadell.
