LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team
and Coach Steve Finnell upon the occasion of capturing their fifth New
York State Class B Championship along with their superb National No. 1
ranking

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, After chasing its fifth state championship for 12 years, the
Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team went undefeated and won the New York
State Class B Championship by defeating Irondequoit 11-4; the Trojans
also attained a major milestone consensus No. 1 ranking among all high
schools throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team won their
seventh straight Nassau County Class B title along with a third straight
Long Island Championship; and
WHEREAS, Ever since defeating then top-ranked Conestoga, Pennsylvania,
on April 14, 2012, by a score of 12-11, the Garden City Boys Lacrosse
Team had earned the No. 1 National ranking which subsequently made the
Trojans the main focal point in high school lacrosse; and
WHEREAS, Although dealing with the pressures of national prominence,
these stellar athletes kept their composure throughout the season
acquiring a perfect 22-0 record; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by this team is due in great
part to the efforts of Coach Steve Finnell, a skilled and inspirational
tutor, respected for his ability to develop potential into excellence;
and
WHEREAS, The team's overall record is outstanding, and the team
members were loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans,
friends and the community at large; and
WHEREAS, The hallmarks of the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team, from the
opening game of the season to participation in the championship, were a
brotherhood of athletic ability, of good sportsmanship, of honor and of
scholarship, demonstrating that these team players are second to none;
and
WHEREAS, Athletically and academically, the team members have proven
themselves to be an unbeatable combination of talents, reflecting favor-
ably on their school; and
WHEREAS, Coach Steve Finnell and Assistant Coaches Dave Ettinger and
Joe Jacovina have done a superb job in guiding, molding and inspiring
the team members toward their goals; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Coach Steve Finnell and the outstanding athletes on
the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team have clearly made a contribution to
the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team; its members: Justin
Guterding, Devin Dwyer, Liam Kennedy, Lucas Clay, Anton Dobrolezhin, Dan
Marino, Cody George, Jack Worstell, Rob Savage, Ryan Norton, Brian
Badgett, Mike Comiskey, Ed Blatz, P.J. McGovern, Kiernan Byrnes, Conor
McDonnell, Thomas Holbrook, Connor Marrone, Jack Metzler, Mike Lofrese,

Brian Defliese, Mark Ellis, Skye MacLeod, Matt Schmelzinger, Patric
Berkery, Eugene Berkery, Chris Harder, Matt Leto, James Sullivan, Scott
D'Antonio, Elias Georgas, Tim McDonagh, Sean Digan, Connor Byrnes, Pat
Niebler, Andre Stone, Tom Wright, Matt Ventre, Matt Borges, Dan Dolan,
Pat Finneran, Kyle Skramko, and Matt Cortese and Coach Steve Finnell and
Assistant Coaches Dave Ettinger and Joe Jacovina, along with Athletic
Director Nancy Kalafus on their outstanding season and overall team
record; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Garden City Boys Lacrosse Team and to the aforementioned
staff.
