ATIVE RESOLUTION commending Project Chernobyl upon the occasion of designated a Center of Excellence in the diagnosis and treatment roid disease and thyroid cancer S, Over the past 20 years, statistics have shown thyroid cancer is a few cancers on the rise in the United States; chances of g thyroid cancer has increased more than three-fold during this and unlike many others, thyroid cancer affects a much younger tion, more commonly women; and EAS, Scientists are still not sure what causes this rapid rise in rates; some of the known causes are: exposure to radiation after r tests; exposure to medical radiation, especially when young; and troduction of ultrasound and better diagnostic equipment; and EAS, To many, the greatest peace-time nuclear accident ever, the wn at the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, is re than a long-forgotten history lesson; this is not so to the ds of thousands of immigrants from that region who now reside in ork; this year marks the 25th Anniversary of this horrific event; EAS, Under the luminous direction of its President, Dr. Daniel ranovan, Project Chernobyl, a community-led effort to diagnose and thyroid cancer, has successfully launched and managed a road-based ation campaign to educate the hundreds of thousands of immigrants York State from regions exposed to radiation after the Chernobyl r accident of increased risks of developing thyroid cancer; and EAS, Project Chernobyl has also expanded the screening program to ns of New York State residents at increased risk of thyroid cancer work-related exposure, excessive diagnostic exposure to radi- and toxic exposures during the 9/11 terrorist attack and subse- clean-up efforts; and EAS, Project Chernobyl continues its efforts to serve the communi- ected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident; the team of Russian- ng Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive surgeons from The New ye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI), led by Thyroid Center Director Dr. Igor Branovan, coordinate diagnostic screenings and treatment of d cancer patients; and EAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when campaigns ch noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, hould be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it LVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to d Project Chernobyl upon the occasion of being designated a Center ellence in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease and d cancer; and be it further LVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- d to Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan, Director of the Thyroid Center, The rk Eye and Ear Infirmary and President of Project Chernobyl.
