LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the
Village of Manlius, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and recog-
nize the distinguished histories of communities across this great Empire
State, and to celebrate the people and places that make these communi-
ties strong; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 200th Anniversary of the Village of Manlius, in Onondaga Coun-
ty, New York, to be celebrated with a public Bicentennial Ball on April
27, 2013; and
WHEREAS, For the past 200 years, the Village of Manlius has proudly
stood as a close-knit, safe and vibrant community in the Eastern suburbs
of Onondaga County, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Manlius, which was settled by a German immi-
grant, John A. Shaeffer, was granted powers of self-government by the
New York State Legislature on March 12, 1813; Manlius became the first
village in Onondaga County; and
WHEREAS, Before the construction of the Erie Canal, the Village of
Manlius served as one of the most prominent business points in Onondaga
County, since goods were transported through Manlius along Cherry Valley
Turnpike and Seneca Turnpike; and
WHEREAS, Even after the Erie Canal and other villages were created in
the County, the Village of Manlius remained a strong center of trade for
surrounding farmlands; and
WHEREAS, In 1834, the Manlius Academy was founded and served as a
private institution for boys and girls until it evolved into the Manlius
Military School, which sent male officers into two world wars; the
Manlius Military School eventually closed in 1974, and the property was
turned into residential housing; and
WHEREAS, After World War II, the Village of Manlius became one of the
fastest growing communities in New York State; its public water supply
was extended and developers provided a private sewage treatment system,
which later became publicly operated; and
WHEREAS, The history of the Village of Manlius is rich in, but not
limited to, many modern advancements, distinguished industries, notable
individuals, prominent landmarks, and popular parks such as Mill Run
Park, the Village's largest park, and Swan Pond; and
WHEREAS, In 1973, 46 buildings in the Village of Manlius joined the
National Register of Historic Places as Onondaga County's first Historic
District; and
WHEREAS, Since its establishment, the Village of Manlius has grown to
nearly 5,000 residents, and these residents are provided with various
municipal services, including fire protection and emergency medical
services by the Manlius Fire Department, police protection by the Town
of Manlius, and public education by the Fayetteville-Manlius Central
School District; and
WHEREAS, The Village of Manlius has continued its steadfast commitment
to enhancing the quality of life for all of its residents, ensuring a
safe, peaceful and educational climate for individuals and families to
thrive; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Village of Manlius to be cele-
brated with a Bicentennial Ball on April 27, 2013, in order to recognize
the significant role a village plays in the life of the community of the
State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Paul Whorrall, Mayor, Village of Manlius.
