Introduced  by  Sens.  DeFRANCISCO,  ALESI,  BONACIC, FUSCHILLO, GOLDEN,
  GRIFFO, MORAHAN, VOLKER -- read twice and ordered  printed,  and  when
  printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation

AN  ACT  to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the elimi-
  nation of any fees associated with the distinctive license plates  for
  purple heart recipients

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 404-e of the vehicle  and  traffic
law,  as  amended by chapter 486 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read
as follows:
  3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this section shall be issued
in the same manner as other number plates [upon payment of  the  regular
registration  fee  prescribed  by section four hundred one of this arti-
cle], provided, however, that no  REGISTRATION  FEE  OR  service  charge
shall  be  charged  for  such plate. FURTHERMORE, UPON THE ISSUANCE OF A
DISTINCTIVE PLATE PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION, SUCH PURPLE HEART  RECIPIENT
SHALL  BE  EXEMPT FROM THE PAYMENT OF ANY FEES RELATING TO THE REGISTRA-
TION OR RENEWAL THEREOF AS PRESCRIBED BY SECTION  FOUR  HUNDRED  ONE  OF
THIS ARTICLE.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
