BILL NUMBER:S2408 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 548 of the laws of 2004, amending the education law relating to certain tuition waivers for police officer students of the city university of New York, in relation to making permanent the provisions of such chapter PURPOSE: This bill continues for 2 years, a tuition waiver for one course for police officer students in baccalaureate or higher degree programs at CUNY. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of the bill amends chapter 548 of the laws of 2004 which required the Board of Trustees of the city University of New York (CUNY) to promulgate regulations to permit members of the New York City police Department who are enrolled in programs leading to a baccalaureate or higher degree at CUNY, to take one course without tuition, on a space available basis, provided that the course is related to their employment as a police officer. JUSTIFICATION: The original bill (chapter 548 of 2004) was based on a tuition waiver program sponsored by John Jay College of Criminal Justice during the late 1970s through the 1980s. It provides a strong incentive for police officers to pursue higher education by authorizing a tuition wavier for one course for police officer students at CUNY. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: S.7645 Referred to Rules A.11016 Referred to Higher Education FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined. EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately.
