BILL NUMBER:S269 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to providing distinctive license plates for combat medics PURPOSE: Provides for the issuance of Combat Medic license plates for vehicles. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends �404-x of the Vehicle and Traffic law to include distinctive license plates for Combat Medics who were awarded the Combat Medical Badge. Section one states the requirements for application and the fees to purchase such license plates. Section 2 contains the effective date. EXISTING LAW: No such license plate currently exists. JUSTIFICATION: New York currently offers a custom license plate recognizing Combat Infantrymen. However, there is no license plate to recognize Combat Medics. Combat Medics serve wherever Combat Infantrymen do and the number of points needed for promotion are equal for the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Combat Medic Badge. AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to providing
distinctive license plates for combat medics
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new
section 404-x to read as follows:
S 404-X. DISTINCTIVE PLATES FOR COMBAT MEDICS. 1. ANY COMBAT MEDIC
RESIDING IN THIS STATE SHALL, UPON REQUEST, BE ISSUED A LICENSE PLATE
BEARING THE WORDS "COMBAT MEDIC". APPLICATION FOR SAID LICENSE PLATE
SHALL BE FILED WITH THE COMMISSIONER IN SUCH FORM AND DETAIL AS THE
COMMISSIONER SHALL PRESCRIBE. FOR PURPOSES OF THIS SECTION, "COMBAT
MEDIC" SHALL MEAN A PERSON WHO SERVED OR IS SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES
OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO WAS AWARDED THE COMBAT MEDICAL BADGE AND IF
DISCHARGED WAS DISCHARGED THEREFROM UNDER OTHER THAN DISHONORABLE CONDI-
TIONS.
2. THE DISTINCTIVE PLATE AUTHORIZED BY THIS SECTION SHALL BE ISSUED
UPON PROOF, SATISFACTORY TO THE COMMISSIONER, THAT THE APPLICANT IS A
WAR ON TERROR VETERAN.
3. A DISTINCTIVE PLATE ISSUED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION SHALL BE ISSUED
IN THE SAME MANNER AS OTHER NUMBER PLATES UPON PAYMENT OF THE REGULAR
REGISTRATION FEE PRESCRIBED BY SECTION FOUR HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE,
PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT AN ADDITIONAL ONE-TIME SERVICE CHARGE OF TEN
DOLLARS SHALL BE CHARGED FOR SUCH PLATE.
S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
