BILL NUMBER:S2722

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to authorizing reduced rates for water charged to laundry businesses

PURPOSE: Authorizes reduced rates fox water charged to laundry businesses.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1. The general municipal law is amended by adding a new section 118-d. Laundries; reduced water rates.

JUSTIFICATION: Local businesses and residents are already struggling in this tough economy and with higher water rates everyone will feel the burden of an already tight budget.

This is especially true of businesses such as laundries with a high water usage/waste water disposal necessity. These increases will inevitably have a trickle down affect. Businesses will have to raise costs to the consumer and there is a real possibility that additional increases could end with the need for layoffs and even business closures.

A reduced water rate for businesses such as laundry mats/laundry service providers would allow businesses to ensure competitive pricing to their existing consumer base while continuing to draw new clientele to their businesses and the retention of their existing personnel.

EXISTING LAW: 2010: S.8432 Held in Rules 2011: S.3705 Referred to Local Government 2012: S.3705 Referred to Local Government

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined.

LOCAL FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
