Memo

BILL NUMBER:S2918

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to issuance of distinctive plates for the "75th Anniversary of Ducks Unlimited"

PURPOSE: This bill would provide any person residing in this state, upon request, a distinctive Ducks Unlimited license plate.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: The vehicle and traffic law is amended by adding a new section 404-x to create a distinctive license plate to mark the 75th anniversary of the Ducks Unlimited.

JUSTIFICATION: Last year marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of Ducks Unlimited. An organization with such a deep and profound impact on the community and environment in New York deserves due recognition by the State.

Started in 1937 during the Dust Bowl when North America's drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows, the organization's mission is habitat conservation. With almost 15,000 members in New York State, Ducks Unlimited has become one of New York's top conservationist organizations.

To date, they have conserved over 44,000 acres of land in New York and spent over $23 million on projects in the State. Last year alone, Ducks Unlimited raised over a million dollars for conservation projects.

This legislation would create a distinctive license plate to mark the 75th anniversary of the Ducks Unlimited.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New Bill

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.

EFFECTIVE DATE: The first of April next succeeding the date on which it shall have become law.
