S3032-2013 Memo
BILL NUMBER:S3032 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to affixing school district websites on school buses PURPOSE: The purpose of the legislation is to permit school districts to affix their websites on their fleet of school buses. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Amends section 1223-a of the vehicle and traffic law to allow school buses to have the uniform resource locator (URL) of the school district's website printed in three inch bold type on the rear of the buses. EXISTING LAW: Current law only permits school districts to have their phone numbers affixed to the rear of school buses. JUSTIFICATION: Currently, school districts are only permitted to affix their phone numbers on the rear of their fleet of school buses. With all of the recent advancements in technology and communication, many school districts have created their own websites, which have become an increasingly important tool for facilitating open communication between the districts and residents. This legislation will provide members of the community with yet another means of contacting their school district should they so desire. It is important to note that this legislation permits, but does not require, a school district to add their website to the school buses in its fleet. School districts should be permitted to affix their websites on the back of their school buses if they so choose. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: S.6826 of 2010, S.2371 of 2011 FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None to state. EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately.
