BILL NUMBER:S3150 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to health insurance coverage for surviving domes- tic partners of members of the police department and the fire department who are enrolled in a health insurance plan PURPOSE: To allow the spouses of deceased retired New York city police officers to continue their health insurance coverage. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill would provide that the surviving spouse or eligible domestic partner of a retired member of the New York city police Department will be permitted to continue to be covered by health insurance. This bill would include the surviving spouse of a police officer who retired from the New York city Housing and Transit Authorities prior to the merger of those police departments with the New York City police Department. EFFECTS: Eligibility for health insurance ceases upon the death of the retiree and the surviving spouse or eligible domestic partner is not entitled to further coverage. This bill provides for that additional coverage. JUSTIFICATION: The loss of medical insurance to retired individuals is one of the most devastating occurrences, leaving those people in some- times desperate straits. This bill allows the surviving spouses of deceased New York City police officers to retain such coverage. EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
