BILL NUMBER:S3664 TITLE OF BILL: An act directing the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to install a permanent plaque, monument or memori- al commemorating the historic traverse of the Niagara River Gorge on a high wire by Mr. Nik Wallenda PURPOSE: To appropriately commemorate the historic walk over the Niagara River Gorge accomplished by Nik Wallenda on June 15, 2012. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of the bill directs the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to install a permanent plaque, monument or other marker commemorating the historic traverse of the Niagara River Gorge on a high wire by Mr. Nik Wallenda. Section 2 of the bill authorizes the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation to promulgate regulations to implement this act. Section 3 of the bill is the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: In 2011, New York State enacted Chapter 572 of the Laws of 2011 to authorize the traverse of the Niagara River Gorge by Nik Wallenda. On June 15, 2012, Nik Wallenda became the first man in over 100 years to accomplish this amazing and historic feat. The occasion was

MAZIARZ -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation AN ACT directing the office of parks, recreation and historic preserva- tion to install a permanent plaque, monument or memorial commemorating the historic traverse of the Niagara River Gorge on a high wire by Mr. Nik Wallenda THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, rule or regu- lation to the contrary, the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation is authorized and directed to install a permanent plaque, monument, memorial or other permanent marker commemorating the historic traverse of the Niagara River Gorge on a high wire by Mr. Nik Wallenda that occurred on June 15, 2012 authorized pursuant to Chapter 572 of the Laws of 2011. Such plaque, monument, memorial or other marker shall be installed at the exact location within the Niagara Falls State Park on which Mr. Nik Wallenda commenced the historic walk. S 2. The commissioner of the office of parks, recreation and historic preservation is authorized and directed to promulgate regulations neces- sary to implement the provisions of this act. S 3.
