TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring charter schools employee salaries to be less than the salary of the chancellor of the department of education

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: The amendment adds a new section 2858. § 2858 requires that no employee of a charter school located in the city of New York shall earn a salary greater than the chancellor of the city school district. It also requires that employees of a charter school located outside of New York City shall not earn a salary greater than the school superintendent of the district where the charter school is located.

JUSTIFICATION: Under the current law, there has been a great deal of controversy regarding the extremely high salaries earned by executives of many charter schools. This bill solves this controversy by imposing a limit on the pay of charter school employees.

The education law is amended by adding a new section 2858 to read as follows: S 2858. CHARTER SCHOOL PERSONNEL; SALARIES. NO CHARTER SCHOOL PERSON- NEL, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, TEACHERS, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, AND OTHER SCHOOL EMPLOYEES, SHALL EARN A SALARY OR OTHER REMUNERATION WHICH IS GREATER THAN THE SALARY OR REMUNERATION OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE DISTRICT IN WHICH SUCH CHARTER SCHOOL IS LOCATED OR, FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS LOCATED IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK, THE CHANCELLOR OF THE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK. THE SALARY OR OTHER REMUNERATION OF SUCH CHARTER SCHOOL PERSONNEL SHALL BE THE ENTIRE SALARY OR REMUNERATION FROM ALL CHARTER SCHOOLS BY WHICH SUCH PERSON IS EMPLOYED. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
