BILL NUMBER:S4248 TITLE OF BILL: An act in relation to term of service of trustee-elects of the Mount Vernon board of education during the 2011 and 2012 elections PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To minimize the cost factor in school board trustee elections and to provide an easier flow of trustees to the school board. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1 states that for the May 2011 Mt. Vernon School Board elections, when four trustee seats are elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a term of two years. For the May 2012 Mt. Vernon school Board elections, when four trustee seats are elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a one year term. JUSTIFICATION: Trustees for the Mt. Vernon School Board are elected every three years. Currently, voters elect four trustees one year, four trustees the following year and one trustee the third year. HASSELL-THOMPSON -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT in relation to term of service of trustee-elects of the Mount Vernon board of education during the 2011 and 2012 elections THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any general, special or local law to the contrary, for the annual budget vote and election of the Mount Vernon board of education to be held in May 2011 during which four trustee seats are to be elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth-highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a term of two years. For the annual budget vote and election of the Mount Vernon board of education to be held in May 2012 during which four trustee seats are to be elected, the trustee-elect who obtains the fourth-highest vote total shall be appointed to serve a term of one year.
