TITLE OF BILL:
An act
to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the
state highway system in the town of Islip as
the "Grace Peshkur
Memorial Bridge"

PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
This legislation would designate the bridge on Waverly Avenue which
crosses interstate route 495 in the town of Islip, the "Grace Peshkur
Memorial Bridge".

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section One amends the highway law by adding a new section 342-kk
which designates a portion of the state highway system the "Grace
Peshkur Memorial Bridge".
Section Two directs the commissioner of transportation to install and
maintain adequate signage as is designated by this act. The renaming
of the bridge is ceremonial in nature and the official name shall
remain unchanged to avoid confusion and limit disruption in commerce.
Section Three is the effective date.

JUSTIFICATION:
On May 17, 2009, Grace Peshkur died at age seven of a rare and
incurable skin disease. During her short life, Grace touched the
lives of everyone in the community of Holtsville and beyond with her
strength and fighting spirit. From birth, she struggled with
incredibly burdensome equipment and time consuming procedures every
day while yearning to join other little boys and girls in normal
childhood activities. Despite these hardships imposed on her by her
condition, little Grace, known by those close to her as Tinkerbelle,
or Princess, lived life with a smile and a laugh, inspiring everyone
around her with her strength, sweetness and perseverance.
Grace Peshkur was deprived of her life by this horrible illness, and
was also deprived of a childhood during the short time she spent here
on earth.
This dedication will memorialize Grace in her community and remind
those who travel this bridge of the mark that she left on the hearts
of those in her community.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
 the state highway system in the town of Islip as  the  "Grace  Peshkur
 Memorial Bridge"
 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

 

Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new  section  342-kk
 to read as follows:

 

S  342-KK.  PORTION  OF  STATE  HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE
 "GRACE PESHKUR MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE  BRIDGE  ON  WAVERLY  AVENUE  WHICH
 CROSSES  INTERSTATE  ROUTE  495 IN THE TOWN OF ISLIP, COUNTY OF SUFFOLK,
 SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "GRACE PESHKUR MEMORIAL BRIDGE".
 

S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the  instal
 lation  and  maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
 as designated pursuant to section one of this  act.  However,  to  avoid
 confusion  and  to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig
 nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall  be  one  of
 ceremonial  nature  and  the  official  name of such bridge shall not be
 changed as a result of this act.
 

S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
