BILL NUMBER:S4836 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in Nassau county as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Highway" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: The purpose of this bill is to memorialize a section of the Cross Island Parkway as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Bridge". SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: § 1. Amends the highway law to add a new section 344-d to designate a portion of the state highway system constituting the Cross Island Parkway, New York Route 907-A in Nassau and Queens counties between exits 26 and 27 as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Highway". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide further installation and maintenance of adequate signage of the state highway system designated by § I of this act. JUSTIFICATION:

MARTINS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in Nassau county as the "Police Officer Arthur Lopez Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-d to read as follows: S 344-D. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "POLICE OFFICER ARTHUR LOPEZ MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING THE CROSS ISLAND PARK- WAY, NEW YORK STATE ROUTE NINE HUNDRED SEVEN-A, IN THE COUNTIES OF QUEENS AND NASSAU BETWEEN EXITS TWENTY-SIX AND TWENTY-SEVEN, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "POLICE OFFICER ARTHUR LOPEZ MEMORIAL HIGH- WAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act; provided that, to avoid any confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act. S 3. This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. JUSTIFICATION: Police Officer Arthur Lopez was a nine year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department and served with distinction. On October 23, 2012, Officer Lopez, while working in the Nassau County Police Department's Emergency Service Unit, was shot in the chest and killed by the subject of an investigation. S 2.
