BILL NUMBER:S4990 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to transport of law enforcement canines injured in the line of duty Purpose: To allow paramedics to transport injured canines to the nearest animal hospital or veterinary clinic. Summary of Provisions: Section 1 amends the Public Authorities Law by adding a section 122-c, which allows paramedics to transport injured canines for treatment at animal facilities, so long as all emergency responders have been accounted for. Section 2 sets forth the effective date. Justification: Police dogs serve a very important role in law enforcement, and their responsibilities are increasing with time. They search for drugs, explosives, and lost people. They protect their handlers as well and assist them in their duties. Their value is reflected in the penalties for harming police dogs, as assaulting a police dog brings similar

VALESKY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Local Government AN ACT to amend the general municipal law, in relation to transport of law enforcement canines injured in the line of duty THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The general municipal law is amended by adding a new section 122-c to read as follows: S 122-C. TRANSPORT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT CANINES INJURED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE PARAMEDIC OR EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN MAY TRANSPORT ANY CANINE IN A LAW ENFORCEMENT UNIT INJURED IN THE LINE OF DUTY TO A VETERINARY CLINIC OR SIMILAR SUCH FACILITY PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT THERE ARE NO PERSONS REQUIRING MEDICAL ATTENTION OR TRANSPORT AT SUCH TIME.
