BILL NUMBER:S5405 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 459 of the laws of 1996 amending the public health law relating to recertification of persons providing emergency medical care, in relation to extending the provisions thereof PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to extend a program that allows continuing education recertification for emergency medical services technicians. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill would extend for five years the pilot program that allows emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs), who have completed the necessary continuing education requirements, to renew their certification without completing a written examination. JUSTIFICATION: This program was originally enacted as an alternative to the written examination required of EMTs and AEMTs. The program needs to be extended to permit the continuation of this alternative recertification process. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
