BILL NUMBER:S5521

TITLE OF BILL: An act to authorize the Dutchess county department of personnel to hire Frederick A. Eberhard, Charles Eyler III and Justin R. Hogan, as full time sheriff deputies

PURPOSE: Authorizes the Dutchess county department of personnel to hire Frederick A. Eberhard, Charles Eyler III, and Justin R. Hogan as full time sheriff deputies.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Notwithstanding the provisions of section 58 of the civil service law, the Dutchess county department of personnel is hereby authorized to hire Frederick A. Eberhard, Charles Eyler III and Justin R. Hogan, who are currently part-time sheriff deputies with the Dutchess county sheriff's office, for provisional appointments as full-time sheriff deputies, until such time as they are able to complete the competitive exam for such positions.

JUSTIFICATION: This bill relates to part-time deputies with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department who were unable to take the last civil service exam because they were serving on active duty with the Armed Forces. The sheriff's department would like to hire them as full-time deputies now and would have hired them as full-time deputies already had they been able to take the last civil service exam.

As part-time deputies they go through the same back ground checks as full-time deputies. The same professional standards are expected. These deputies volunteered.to serve their country in the military. This bill would recognize their service by allowing the sheriff's department to hire them as full-time deputies contingent on their taking and passing the next civil service exam.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.

EFFECTIVE DATE; This act shall take effect immediately.
