BILL NUMBER:S5563
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to speed limits in the city of Long Beach, Nassau county
PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety in Long Beach, New York.
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This bill amends the Vehicle and Traffic Law º1643 to permit the establishment of a less than thirty mph speed zone but no less than 15 mph on certain streets in Long Beach, New York.
JUSTIFICATION: The proposed bill is justified mainly for the following two reasons:
1. The area of Long Beach affected by the bill is a residential neighborhood close to several popular beaches. The safety of pedestrian beachgoers would be enhanced by lower speed limits.
2. All of the streets mentioned are less than a quarter mile long. A lower speed limit would help safety by slowing down drivers not familiar with the area who enter this portion of Long Beach and continue to drive at the speed they do on main roads.
LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New legislation.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
