Limits the expenditures by candidates for senate and assembly.
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the election law, in relation to limiting the expenditures by candidates for senate and assembly
PURPOSE: To limit the expenditures by senate and assembly campaigns.
SUMMARY PROVISIONS: The election law is amended by adding a new section 14-105 to read as followed: 1. Limit expenditures by senate and assembly campaigns. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, any candidate for senate is prohibited from spending more than three hundred thousand dollars and any candidate for assembly is prohibited from spending more than one hundred and fifty thousand dollars on an election for such respective office. 2. The state board of elections shall promulgate any rules and regulations necessary for the implementation of this section.
JUSTIFICATION: The most significant step in reforming the campaign finance process is to limit the amount a campaign can spend. If enacted, this bill would accomplish this goal by limiting the expenditures of both New York State Assembly and Senate campaigns. Those running for Assembly will be limited to $150,000 in spending and those running for Senate would be limited to $300,000.
