BILL NUMBER:S5702 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the elder law, in relation to long term care ombudsman access to assisted living facilities; to repeal certain provisions of the elder law relating thereto; and providing for the repeal of certain provisions upon the expiration thereof PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: The purpose of this bill is to extend certain provisions of the long term care ombudsman program for two years. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This bill would extend the authorization of the long term care ombudsman program to advocate on behalf of managed long term care participants until December 31, 2017. This bill would also make technical corrections to the statute. JUSTIFICATION: The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP) is an important advocate for seniors in long term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and adult homes. Currently the LTCOP is also authorized to oversee managed long term care plans, but these provisions are set to expire on December 31, 2015. More study is needed to determine the role of the LTCOP in relation to managed long term care plans and ensuring that seniors are receiving the best, most appropriate care. PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.
