BILL NUMBER:S5737 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk as the "Purple Heart Way" PURPOSE: This bill would designate a portion of the state highway system in Nassau and Suffolk Counties as the "Purple Heart Way" SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Adds new section 343-w to the Highway Law designating a portion of the Northern State Parkway beginning at the Queens/ Nassau County border in the Village of Lake Success, Town of North Hempstead, County of Nassau and continuing east along the Northern State Parkway to its terminus at, Hauppauge, Suffolk County as "Purple Heart Way" JUSTIFICATION: This bill is being introduced at the request of Conrad Steers, NYS Commander, New York Military Order of the Purple Heart USA, as an appropriate memorial to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 15, 1917 with the United

MARCELLINO -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk as the "Purple Heart Way" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-y to read as follows: S 343-Y. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "PURPLE HEART WAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM BEGIN- NING AT THE NASSAU COUNTY LINE IN THE VILLAGE OF LAKE SUCCESS, TOWN OF NORTH HEMPSTEAD, COUNTY OF NASSAU CONSTITUTING THE NORTHERN STATE PARK- WAY AND CONTINUING EAST ALONG THE NORTHERN STATE PARKWAY TO ITS TERMINUS IN THE HAMLET OF HAUPPAUGE IN THE TOWNS OF ISLIP AND SMITHTOWN, COUNTY OF SUFFOLK SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "PURPLE HEART WAY". S 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
