BILL NUMBER:S5752 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to burial of indigent veterans of the armed forces of the United States PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: The purpose of this bill is to provide state reimbursement to congressionally charted veterans organization who provide funeral and burial services to indigent veterans who died in a county or City of New York. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of this bill would amend Section 148 of the General Municipal Law by adding a new subdivision 1-a. Section 2. Effective Date JUSTIFICATION: There are various Congressionally chartered veterans organizations that attempt to provide a dignified and honorable burial to veterans who otherwise cannot afford one. Due to the high cost of some funeral related expenses, this sometimes is not possible, There have been cases in New York City where the casket of an indigent veteran has broken apart as the pall bearers move the container during the burial services at the cemetery. This legislation would help in achieving the goal of giving veterans the burial they deserve.
