BILL NUMBER:S5770 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the tax law, in relation to authorizing certain counties to impose hotel or motel taxes PURPOSE: To authorize counties, which are not otherwise authorized to impose hotel or motel taxes, to impose such taxes at a rate not to exceed 5 % SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 The tax law is amended by adding new section 1202-cc to authorize hotel or motel taxes in certain counties at local option. Section 2 Contains the effective date JUSTIFICATION: Currently there are 10 counties that do not impose a local occupancy tax. This legislation will allow these counties to adopt and amend local laws to impose hotel or motel taxes . The rate of the tax shall not exceed 5 %. This tax would allow counties to help fund tourism and promotion costs or to address costs resulting from an influx of tourism, such as additional police costs during special events, parades, rallies or concerts. These costs can be difficult to sustain in a municipal budget and allowing counties this hotel or motel tax will allow them to generate additional funds.
