BILL NUMBER:S5898 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to adding a representative from WUFO Studios to the Michigan Street African Heritage Corridor commission PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To increase the size of the Michigan Street African American Corridor commission from twelve members to thirteen members. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This bill amends Section 1 of Article 41.05 of the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Law. JUSTIFICATION: The site for the Michigan Street African American Corridor is rich in African American History. It was previously referred to as "The Michigan Street Preservation Area" and it attained national recognition for its unique cultural resources and historically significant buildings.

KENNEDY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to adding a representative from WUFO Studios to the Michigan Street African Heritage Corridor commission THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The opening paragraph of section 41.05 of the parks, recre- ation and historic preservation law, as amended by chapter 359 of the laws of 2012, is amended to read as follows: The commission is hereby established as a not-for-profit corporation. The commission shall be governed by the not-for-profit corporation law except where such law conflicts with this article, in which case the provisions of this article shall govern. The commission shall consist of up to [twelve] THIRTEEN voting members and seven non-voting ex-officio members. One member each shall be appointed by the governor, the tempo- rary president of the senate, and the speaker of the assembly. Other members shall include the mayor of the city of Buffalo, or his or her designee, a representative of museum studies at the state university of New York College at Buffalo, two representatives of the department of Afro-American studies at the state university of New York at Buffalo, a representative from the Monroe Fordham regional history center at the state university of New York College at Buffalo, A REPRESENTATIVE FROM WUFO STUDIOS, and a representative from each board governing the J. Edward Nash House, the Michigan Street Baptist Church, the Langston Hughes Institute, and the Colored Musicians Club. All appointments shall be residents of the city of Buffalo, but the commission has the authori- ty to waive this requirement at its discretion. In addition, seven non- voting members shall serve ex-officio: the secretary of state, the commissioners of the office of parks, recreation and historic preserva- tion, environmental conservation, economic development and education, EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
